How To Clean A Fountain Pen

I think it’s very important to know how to take care of your fountain pens. They are always in contact with the ink and if we do not clean them regularly and properly, the ink can dry, preventing correct fluidity when writing.

In addition, if we have a large collection of fountain pens, it’s also very important to store and organize them correctly after cleaning.

The time required to clean a fountain pen will depend on several factors: how much we have used it, the accumulated ink level, etc.

Below, you will find some tips for cleaning your pens depending on the model.

Necessary materials:

  • room temperature water
  • a glass
  • paper towels
  • a microfiber cloth

How To Clean a Cartridge Feather Pen

Once the cartridge is empty, you have to open the pen and remove it.

Fill the glass with water at room temperature and put the nib into the glass. As mentioned, this step can take from 2 hours up to 24 hours. If the water becomes dirty and saturated with ink, do not hesitate to change it with fresh, clean water.

To clean the body of the pen, put it under tap water and use a cotton swab to thoroughly wash the inside.

Once finished, wipe the pen with paper towels. In order to dry it completely and give it some shine, you can use a microfibre cloth on the surface.

How To Clean a Fountain Pen

If you are about to clean your fountain pen, the first step should be to make sure there is no more ink in the pen. If there is any left, you need to empty it.

Once empty, put the pen in the glass of water and refill and empty it several times until the water is clear and there’s no more ink in it.

After that, take a new glass of water and put the pen in it with the pump open. Once clean, remove the pen and dry it as described above with the paper towels or the microfibre cloth.

How To Clean a Fountain Pen With Converter

The process of cleaning a fountain pen with a converter is a mixture of the previous two steps.

First, you need to unscrew the body of the pen from the nib section and put the nib in a glass filled with room temperature water.

Once the converter is empty, fill it with water and empty it several times until it’s completely clean. After that, put the converter and the nib in two separate glasses of water for the time it takes for the ink residue to come out.

Dry the parts with the paper towels and then use the microfiber cloth to give it the final touch.
