If you are just starting out with calligraphy or perhaps are just passionate about handwriting, you probably have a lot of questions about all the different types of pens and when should they be used and for what. I know I did!
So, today I will talk about fine liner pens and what are its main functions as a writing instrument.
The main uses of a fine liner pen are:
1. Drawing
A fine liner is a perfect instrument for drawing with precision and will allow you to achieve soft and precise lines and comfortable writing. These characteristics are due to their long tip, which is usually made of plastic or metal in order to ensure its durability.
In addition, the fineliners are an ideal instrument for tracing with a rule as they have a calibrated ring point. Like rollerballs and ballpoint pens, fineliners use brand-specific refills as the refill system, and for most models, there is a wide variety of colors available.
Another advantage is that the ink never dries, even if you don’t use the cap for several days.
2. Writing
Even if fineliner pens are very popular among designers and illustrators, this fine and gentle experience make this pen perfect for writing.
However, it is normally more expensive than a ballpoint pen or rollerball, so if you are not too picky, maybe just go with something cheaper.
Where can you find a fineliner and what are the best ones?
Currently, most brands have included fineliners in their collection so you should have no problem finding them in your usual calligraphy supplies store, or online.
Below are two of my favorite brands and their best seller pens.
StarWalker Midnight Black Fineliner
This model from MontBlanc (my favorite brand ever) is also available with rollerball refills, which makes this piece more versatile because it can be used as a roller or a fineliner.
Its incredible design with black resin and diamond inlays, ruthenium details and the Montblanc logo at the end of the cap makes this piece very attractive.
Graf Von Faber Castell Tamitio Fountain Pen
Made of fluted metal with polished details, the cap of this fineliner carries the quality stamp engraved on its surface ‘Hand made in Germany’.
You can find these fineliners and other models online or in your local shop. Remember, I am more than happy to help you choose the perfect writing instrument for you, so if you have any questions about a particular model, don’t hesitate to leave a comment!
